Life During Coronavirus : Why is this social media's big moment | India Today Insights

Meghdut Roy Chowdhury and Pauline Laravoire, a duo who focuses on education and the creative arts in Kolkata, flew all the way to attend the prestigious South by Southwest conference in Austin, Texas. There, they learned it had been cancelled. Still, as the only people from India to be there for the conference, they made good use of their time. Along with other community leaders, they organised an alternative workshop on education. They sent out messages on Twitter, and used Slack to communicate. "We could not have organised the alternative panel in such short notice without the use of technology," Meghdut says.

Covid 19: Citizen volunteers reach out to those without help

It all began, says Meghdut Roychowdhury, “when my partner Pauline Laravoire and I flew back from a conference in Austin, Texas. Upon returning home, we had to self-quarantine.” They desperately felt the need for some positivity and so began a Facebook group called #Eksaath - Support Group for Quarantine Heroes, for all the self-isolating and quarantining people stuck at home or working from home. When it became apparent that the lockdown was here to stay, Meghdut and his team began hosting fund-raisers with Give India. In just 27 days, the members swelled to a thousand and more

What exactly does it take to sustain a music-first culture? Millennial visionary Meghdut Roy Chowdhury opens up.

The mind behind it, Meghdut RoyChowdhury, was just a teenager when he conceived Eastern India’s first state-of-the-art analog recording studio BlooperHouse Studios; a decade later, his vision to boost independent music in the city, gave way to the city’s biggest cultural mainstay, TopCat CCU. My family has been in education for over 3 decades and, and I wanted to work in the sector. The need of the hour was skill-based education and this started building Offbeat CCU which brings together hospitality (backpacker’s hostel, co-working space) education.

Start-ups, Tech jobs can power rural areas and curb migration to cities

Meghdut Roy Chowdhury said while Technology is certainly a tool to help bridge the gap, it wasn't the only answer to the problem. Meghdut Roy Chowdhury, Director-Global Operations, Techno India Group, "Restricting problem solving to only technology is not the answer. Tech is, at the end of the day, a very sustainable tool, but unless we help people solve their problem it is of no use. Right now we need equal development of rural and urban areas. The problem lies in the fact that there is a lot of migration. They lack the tech and facilities to solve or bridge this gap. With education on our side, we can reach out to a fraction of the rural population and begin the change," he said.

Watch Northeast Indians Say #StopRacism -  By Meghdut Roy Chowdhury of Offbeat CCU & Upahar Biswas Photography

The COVID-19 pandemic has not only disrupted lives and altered the socioeconomic paradigm, but it has also held a mirror to each of our faces. The number of cases of racial discrimination against our brothers and sisters from the Northeast has shot up exponentially.
Now is the time to change, not just to adapt but to also rectify our flaws. Racism is one of the social ills that must be eradicated from our society with immediate effect. When a virus doesn’t discriminate between the lives it affects, who are we to racially profile others. Be a changemaker. Stand up against racism. Spread the word. This video has been produced by Meghdut Roy Chowdhury from Off Beat CCU and Upahar Biswas in association with Reader’s Digest India.

Project Impact - Meghdut Roy Chowdhury

I built my first venture when I was 19. While studying, I realized Engineering was not my cup of tea. I was way better with people than with coding. I started a music recording studio named Blooper House Studios as my first venture. I was building a community in a field that I loved - Music. Growing up around successful entrepreneurs, my vision was clear from an early age; build something great for Kolkata. I grew up watching my dad start his journey teaching kids, and providing computer training. My mom ventured into education with a single school, and now runs a group of thirty educational institutes.

The Roy Chowdhury Saga: How a single family shaped the educational landscape in Eastern India

In 2017, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Chowdhury’s son Meghdut came back from studies abroad at the prestigious HEC Paris, Stanford University and Tel Aviv University, driven back by his love for Kolkata and a strong willingness to use his skills for the betterment of his homeland. The dream of enhancing the Eastern part of the country is a drive that trickled down from father to son, as Prof. Dr. Goutam Roy Chowdhury’s aspiration has always been to make the brain drain wave from Bengal take a U-turn.
Even before reaching 20 years of age, Meghdut had already shown that he inherited the entrepreneurship DNA. At 19, he founded his first venture in Kolkata, BlooperHouse Studios, a music recording studio that he thought would bridge the lack of high-end facilities for local independent artists to shine out – and rightly so.

Motivation to solve a problem, not money, is the key to entrepreneurial success

My father started by teaching kids in his garage, without any investment. However, he knew the market for computer education would grow and was at the right place. When it comes to mass innovation, nothing works better than resource-constrained economies. Your aim must be to create value from absolutely nothing.
A good team can even make a bad idea work, while a bad team cannot make the best idea in the world work. You need a team that understands each other, has complementary skills and goes beyond generating money or ideas. Such a team has safety nets built so that it can pull the organisation out of a crisis even in the absence of the leader.
